Use your PDA as a TV remote control.
If you lost your TV remote or would simply like an extra one, you can build your own using a PDA, smartphone or handheld computer, as long as it has an infrared port. You will also need a piece of software that turns your device into a universal remote. This means that you can use it not only as a remote for the TV, but for the DVD player, stereo, even the air conditioner.
Instructions
1. Buy a mobile device with an infrared port, such as a handheld computer, smartphone, PDA, iPod or Blackberry. You can purchase one online or from an electronic store for about $150 to $300 as of 2011.
2. Choose remote control software compatible with your mobile device and PC. A few that you can use are VITO Remote 4.0, RedEye or NoviiRemote, which cost between $50 and $200 as of 2011.
3. Download and install the software on your computer: Double-click on the file; it will ask you if you wish to install the program. Click "Yes" and "Next" and wait for the program to begin installing. Once it has finished, restart your computer.
4. Plug your mobile device into your computer using its USB cable or syncing cradle.
5. Click "Start" on your computer and then go to "Programs." Open up your mobile device software and go to "File" and "Synchronize Devices." This will download and install the remote application to your mobile device.
6. Disconnect your mobile device from the computer after the installation is completed.
7. Set up the remote control application on your mobile device. Look for the the remote control application installed and open it. Select the "Options" tab and select "Setup Remote." Choose "TV" from the list.
8. Point your old remote control at your mobile device and press and hold down the power key to transfer the code. If you no longer have the TV remote, you can find the code in your TV's user manual. Enter the remote control code for your TV in the "Remote Code" box. Press the "OK" button on your mobile device to activate the remote control function.
