About Samsung Omnia

Samsung's line of Omnia smartphones are built around the Windows Mobile and Windows Phone operating systems. They feature large touchscreens, high resolution cameras and expandable SD memory card slots, making them powerful multimedia phones. Samsung launched the original Samsung Omnia in late 2008. As of March 2011 it has also released the Omnia Lite, the Omnia Pro, the Omnia II and the Omnia 7.

Operating System

The original Samsung Omnia runs Windows Mobile 6.1 Professional. The Omnia uses Samsung's TouchWiz user interface to handle desktop management and menu navigation. The Omnia Lite, Omnia Pro and Omnia II all run Windows Mobile 6.5 Standard. The Omnia 7 runs Windows Phone 7. The Omnia Lite, Omnia Pro, Omnia II and Omnia 7 use an upgraded version of Samsung's Touch Wiz user interface, TouchWiz v2.0.

Input

For the most part, the Omnia line uses the touchscreen as the primary input method. The phones use an onscreen keyboard that can be used in portrait or landscape mode. The phone's internal accelerometer detects orientation shifts to rotate the screen and keyboard accordingly. The Omnia Pro is the only phone in the Omnia line to include a physical keyboard. Its complete QWERTY keyboard slides out from beneath the screen when the phone is held in landscape mode.

Camera

With the exception of the Omnia Lite, all of the phones in the Omnia line have rear-facing five-megapixel cameras for capturing still photos or video. The Omnia Lite has a 3.15 megapixel rear-facing camera. The Omnia Lite, Omnia II, and Omnia Pro also have front facing cameras for capturing video during video calls. These cameras record at VGA quality.

Display

All of the smartphones in the Omnia line feature large displays that take up most of the surface area on the front of the phone. The original Omnia has a 3.20 inch TFT LCD screen with a resolution of 240 pixels by 400 pixels. The Omnia Lite has a slightly smaller 3-inch TFT LCD screen at the same resolution as the original Omnia. The Omnia 2 has a 3.7-inch high-resolution AMOLED display at 480 pixels by 800 pixels. The Omnia Pro has a 3.5-inch AMOLED display at the same resolution as the Omnia 2. The Omnia 7 features the largest screen with a 4-inch Super AMOLED display at the same resolution at the Omnia Pro and Omnia II.
