Turn your laptop
into a GPS unit for driving or hiking.
The Garmin Legend Cx GPS, a premium GPS device sold online and in electronics stores, offers GPS accuracy within 50 feet and runs for up to 36 hours. If you want to save money, turn your laptop into a Garmin Legend GPS equivalent by installing Garmin software on your computer and attaching an appropriate antenna. A laptop will be heavier than a traditional GPS unit, and it won't offer as many hours of power, but it will serve its function well.
Instructions
1. Plug the USB antenna into the USB port of your laptop.
2. Turn on your laptop by pressing the power button. Press the "Eject" button to open the disc tray. Insert the GPS CD.
3. Install the GPS CD. Double-click on the CD icon to open the installation prompt. Enter information and press the "OK" button when prompted. Restart the computer to finish installation. Click on the "Start" menu and scroll to "Power." Click on "Restart" and allow the computer to restart.
4. Turn on the GPS program by double-clicking on the icon of the program.
5. Test the software. Click on the "File" menu and scroll to "Connect." The software should interface with the USB antenna to determine your location and open a map.
