Plant Seed Packets

The back of the seed packet contains information for planting and growing.

Tiny seed packets often contain hundreds of seeds ready to germinate and grow into lush healthy plants. The back of the packet typically provides all the information you need for planting and caring for the plants -- from a description of the plant at maturity to the preferred lighting, soil preferences and fertilizing needs. It also provides information on seed depth and seed spacing. Following manufacturer recommendations increases your growing success. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Select a location that closely matches the lighting needs of your plants. Lighting is typically described as full sun, partial sun (or partial shade) or shade. Full sun refers to an area that receive at least six hours of direct sunlight between the hours of 10 am and 6 pm. Partially sunny areas receive less than 6 hours of sunlight a day. Full shade refers to areas that receive no direct sunlight.

2. Prepare the soil by tilling to a depth of 8 to 10 inches. Remove roots, rocks and other debris from the soil to create loose soil that roots can penetrate easily. Amend the soil to meet your plant's soil requirements. Generally, an addition of 2 to 4 inches of organic matter is recommended.

3. Plant individual seeds to the recommended depth of the seed packet. Planting seeds too shallowly may cause them to germinate quickly and wither away in the sun. Planting them too deeply may prevent the shoots from reaching the surface of the soil to gather food from the sun.

4. Cover the seeds with fresh soil and firm the soil down with your hands. This secures the seeds and prevents air pockets. Some seeds, such as wildflower seeds, do not require covering. Always refer to the recommendations for your particular seeds.

5. Space seeds to their recommended spacing. Although the spacing may seem too far apart, this distance is calculated to allow mature plants the room they need to grow. Planting them closer than recommended results in overcrowding and reduced blooming or fruiting.

6. Spray the area with the spray attachment on your hose to moisten the top 1 to 2 inches of soil. Keep the area moist until seedlings appear and show signs of vigorous growth.
