What Does It Mean When A Phone Is Unlocked

There are many different companies that sell "unlocked" cell phones. An unlocked cell phone will allow you to have a little more freedom in choosing your phone plans and other features.

SIM Cards

A SIM (Subscriber Identification Module) card is a small card in a cellphone that holds information allowing subscribers to make that phone "loyal" to their network. This means a phone with a locked SIM card will only work on a specific phone plan.

Freedom of Calling Plan

Unlocked cell phones give you the freedom to pick and choose whatever cell phone plan you wish, because an unlocked SIM card will work on any telephone network.

Freedom of Travel

Cell phones with unlocked SIM cards can be used in any country with any foreign phone subscriber, and even with "pay as you go" cell phone cards.

Internet Function

When you find a subscriber to use your unlocked cellphone with, it is important to make sure that you obtain the Internet software from the specific company. The Internet functions on phones are often different from one subscriber to another.

Re-sale

Many people sell unlocked cell phones for a little more than the retail value of the phone itself. These phones can usually be purchased from third party dealers.
