Replace your SIM card in your BB5 and unlock it to use it on any network.
BB5 stands for baseband (5th generation) and is a software and hardware technology that was released from Nokia in 2007. At the time, these phones were mainly available in Europe and difficult to find in the United States. If you own one of these phones and would like to have it unlocked, you will need to purchase a code.
Instructions
1. Enter *#06# to get your IMEI (international mobile equipment identification) number. Write down this 15 digit number.
2. Call your network provider's customer service department and request an unlocking code. If you have been a customer for at least 60 days or more, then they may give you a code. You will need to provide them with the phone's IMEI number. If they will not provide you with the code, you will need to purchase one from a third party.
3. Go to an unlocking website. These sites sell single codes for about $20 as of January 2011. You will also need to provide them with an IMEI number in order to create the code.
4. Purchase a SIM card from a local mobile phone store. Make sure the card comes from a network different than the one that you currently use.
5. Turn off your BB5 phone and take out the SIM card that is located beneath your phone's battery. Replace it with the new one and turn the phone back on. You will be asked to enter in a "Special Code."
6. Type in the code that you received and press the "Enter" key. Once the phone accepts the code, it will restart. Once it does, you will get a message that says "SIM Restrictions Off."
