Sprint is a CDMA network, meaning that unlike GSM carriers (AT&T, T-Mobile), its phones can't be used on another network by simply switching a SIM card. CDMA phones don't have SIM cards. Instead, a Sprint phone must be "flashed" to be used on another network. When a phone is "flashed," the software on its internal ROM (read only memory) is updated to allow use on a different carrier. To flash your Sprint phone, you'll have to follow a few steps.
Instructions
1. Choose the network you'd like to use your Sprint phone on. It'll have to be another CDMA carrier, so in the United States, you could move to Alltel, Cricket, US Cellular and many others.
2. Find a store that can flash your Sprint phone for you. You can use a service like Unlock to Talk (see Resources) to find one, or you can try asking the network you'd like to move to if they'll flash your phone. In some cases, they'll do it for you.
3. Take your phone to the store and have its ROM flashed so that you can use it on the network you want.
4. End your relationship with Sprint. If your contract is not up, you may have to pay an early termination fee. If your contract has ended, you'll only have to pay the remaining balance of your bill.
