When you purchase a cell phone like the UTStarcom Quickfire, it is locked to a single network. That means that the phone can only connect to the network of the carrier you signed on with. In order to connect the phone to any network, you need an unlock code. Asking your carrier for such a code is one way to get one, but it is not a guaranteed option. You can also purchase a code from a third-party website, which is the option more likely to net you one. For both options, you need to know your phone's International Mobile Equipment Identity (IMEI) number. You also need to make sure your phone's subscriber identity module (SIM) card is inserted when you try to use your code.
Instructions
1. Dial "*#06#" on the Quickfire's keypad to bring up the IMEI number. Write the number down.
2. Contact your phone's carrier and speak with a customer service representative. Provide him with your phone's IMEI number and request an unlock code. He may choose to not provide you with one, but if he does, write the unlock code down.
3. Visit a website that sells unlock codes (see Resources). Provide the site with your phone's IMEI number and purchase a code. The code is usually sent to you via email.
4. Make sure your phone's SIM card is inserted. Turn the phone on and dial "*#865625#." Enter the unlock code your received when prompted and the phone unlocks. (See Source 2)
