A customer service rep may give you the unlock code for free.
If you want to switch your Nokia 1112 between networks, you will have to switch out the carrier-specific chip inside the battery chamber. If your 1112 came from the original carrier locked, the phone will not allow calls with another carrier's chip inside. This is a software issue, separate from any contractual obligation to stay with your current network. To unlock your 1112, you'll need an unlock code.
Instructions
Pay Sites
1. Open the 1112 page at the Web site GSM Liberty, My Unlock Code, Unlock It Now, Unlocking or GSM Unlock International (See the Resources section of this article). All five are pay sites. Some offer a money-back guarantee. Most allow payment with PayPal in case you do not use a credit card.
2. Remove the 1112's battery. Whichever site you selected in Step 1 will prompt you for the 1112's International Mobile Equipment Identity (IMEI) number. You will find it under the battery. Pay for the code. The site will email the code out within a few hours.
3. Insert your original network's chip under the battery, in case the unlock code requires it. For example, the codes at GSM Unlock International are network-specific. Reinsert the battery so you have power for the next step.
4. Enter your 1112's phone mode. Enter the code into your keypad as directed in the email. If you received the unlock code "A5906J Send," for example, then type in 259065, and then "send" the code to your 1112 by pressing the Send-Call-Talk button.
5. Insert the new network's chip into the battery compartment. Make an outgoing call to test if the carrier lock is gone. If the call goes through, you're done. Otherwise, repeat Steps 3 and 4. If repeated efforts don't work, contact the site that sent you the code so it can rectify the situation.
Free Code from Original Network
6. Call your original carrier's customer service number or go to one of its local branches. Call on a different phone than your 1112, so you can read the IMEI off the 1112 to the representative. Enter the unlock code and make a test call.
7. Ask for an unlock code and read off the IMEI from inside your 1112. Slot the old network's chip under the 1112's battery. Put the battery back in.
8. Enter the code that the representative gives you. Slot in the new network's chip. Test the code with an outgoing call on your 1112. Let the representative go only after your outgoing call goes through.
9. Call customer service back if the first representative was not able to help. Some representatives are more knowledgeable or cooperative than others. Some may not be willing to help you switch to a competitor.
