Truetone and polytone ring tones are two audio options that can play when you receive a phone call on your cellphone. Polytone ring tones, also known as polyphonic ring tones, are the evolution of the older monophonic technology. Truetone ring tones offer the ability to play full versions of songs, including the lyrics and any audio samples.
Polyphonic
While monophonic ring tones were only able to play a signal tone at a time, polyphonic ring tones improved the quality of ring tone audio by playing up to 40 tones at once. Different models of cellphones may support a different number of simultaneous tones. Instead of only the basic tones of its predecessor, polyphonic ring tones are also capable of mimicking the sounds of many instruments. This creates a more realistic and discernable interpretation of commercial music, although not a flawless representation. Polyphonic ring tones are distributed in the MID or MIDI file formats.
Truetone
Truetone ring tones expanded ring tone technology further by offering full and complete versions of music. These ring tones not only played complex tones and audio samples, but the vocals as well. Truetone ring tones are distributed in common audio formats, such as the MP3 format. This type of ring tone may also be referred to as a real tone, or full music ring tone.
Availability
Ring tones are distributed via applications offered by the cellphone's service provider, or by third-party ring tone providers that distribute them on the Web or send them directly to your device. A polyphonic ring tone is typically less expensive than its truetone counterpart. Cellphones that support truetone ring tones can also use compatible audio files that you transfer onto the device as a ring tone.
