Unlocked cellular phones are open for use on any compatible networks.
BlackBerry's 9530 model, also known as the BlackBerry Storm, is Research in Motion's first touchscreen smartphone. The 9530 model features a CDMA antenna that is optimized for use on Verizon's network. Unlocking the phone, however, opens the phone for use on any wireless carrier. Unlocking your phone before your contract has ended may be a breach of contract and result in hefty early termination fees. Check your wireless plan to ensure you will not be penalized for switching carriers.
Instructions
1. Locate your phone's International Mobile Equipment Identity (IMEI) number on the side of your BlackBerry Storm's box, or dial "#06#" from your phone. You will need this unique number for Verizon to provide the correct unlock code for your
BlackBerry Storm.
2. Call Verizon customer service, and ask to speak to a customer service representative. Request a "subsidy unlock code" for your BlackBerry Storm. Provide your IMEI number to the representative. Write down your 16-digit unlock code.
3. Turn on your BlackBerry Storm, and open the main menu. Choose "Options," and open the "Advanced Options" menu. Open the "SIM Card Options" submenu.
4. Press the BlackBerry button (series of seven dots), and pick the "Show Keyboard" option. Type the letters "m", "p", "e" and "d" using the keyboard, in that order. When the screen changes, type in "m", "p", "e" and "2" (press and hold the "alt" key to type numbers). A small window will pop up asking you for the unlock code.
5. Enter the 16-digit unlock code into your phone. Check the "SIM Card" menu again. If done properly, the top of the menu will read "Security Disabled".
