Turn your cell phone into a dial-up modem to access the Web.
Many laptops come equipped with wireless adapters that enable a user to access the Internet from a Wi-Fi hot spot. While hot spots are easy to find in urban areas, Internet access via a wireless connection is not always possible in remote or rural areas. In some areas, there may not even be an available phone line to use for connecting to the Web with the laptop's internal modem. If you have a cell phone and USB data cable, though, you can create dial-up connection virtually anywhere that you can place a call.
Instructions
1. Purchase a USB data-transfer cable compatible with your cell phone.
2. Insert the installation CD that comes with the data cable into the optical drive of your computer. Wait for the installation wizard to appear, then follow the on-screen prompts to install the device drivers for the data transfer cable onto your PC. Restart your PC, if prompted to do so.
3. Turn on your cell phone. Connect the small end of the data transfer cable to the phone, then plug the other end into an empty USB port on your PC. Wait for Windows to detect the cell-phone connection and load the device drivers installed earlier.
4. Click on "Start" and then on "Control Panel." Click on the "Internet Options" link in "Control Panel," then wait for the "Internet Properties" window to appear.
5. Click on the "Connections" tab in the "Internet Options" window. Click on the "Add" button. Click on the "Dial Up" option after the pop-up window appears on the screen.
6. Click and select the dial-up modem listing for your cell phone connection. Enter the dial-up access number in the "Dial-up Phone Number" field. Enter your dial-up username and password in the corresponding fields. Enter a descriptive name for the dial-up connection in the "Connection Name" field, then click on the "Create" button.
7. Launch your Web browser. Windows connects to your cell phone, dials your Internet provider's access number and establishes a dial-up connection.
