Nokia's E71 smart phone features a full QWERTY keyboard, like the ones often used with computers. While working with text, copy, cut and paste functions serve as quick shortcuts to move selected text elsewhere in the document. Computer users know how convenient these shortcuts are. The E71 also lets users perform these tasks.
Selecting Text
You need to select text before you copy, cut or paste it. Selecting it tells the E71 exactly what text you want to work with, copying and pasting only the information you've selected. To select text, navigate to the beginning of the selection you'd like to highlight. Hold down the "Shift" key, the upward-facing arrow near the lower-left corner of the keypad. With "Shift" held down, use the keypad's navigation keys to highlight the text.
Copying Versus Cutting
While the E71 doesn't include a dedicated cut command, copying and cutting perform similar tasks. Copying text leaves the text in its original location, while duplicating it for you to place elsewhere. Cutting copies the selected text, but also deletes the highlighted entry, which works well for moving the text elsewhere in your document.
Copy and Paste
To copy text, highlight it and hold down the "Shift" key, selecting the "Copy" option. Deleting the text after copying it achieves the same results as using "cut" on a computer. After copying the text, navigate to where you want to paste it. Hold down the "Shift" key, selecting "Paste" when the option appears.
Alternate Methods
Holding down "Shift" with text highlighted brings up a small menu to manually select "Copy" or "Paste." The E71 features an alternate method you may find quicker. After highlighting the text, press the "Function" key and the "Chr" key, the lower-left and lower-right keys on the keypad. Once pressed, they simulate pressing "Ctrl" on a computer keyboard. With "Ctrl" activated, press the "C" key to copy and the "V" key to paste.
Considerations
The Nokia E71's manual says these copy and paste functions work in several programs and apps. If copying and pasting aren't working for you, the application you're using may have its own dedicated commands for copying, cutting and pasting. Check for such features by reviewing the documentation that came with the specific application. You can also copy messages, contacts and files to paste elsewhere. Navigate to the item you'd like to copy. Choose "Options," "Mark/Unmark," then "Mark." Paste the item with the same paste method used for text.
