How Do Corded Telephone Headsets Work

Corded headsets are used with landline and mobile phones

Corded telephone headsets plug into mobile or land line phones for hands-free calling. If you have a headset designed for use on a certain cellphone, you'll only be able to use it with that type of phone. Universal corded headsets can be used with any phone, which makes them a good choice if you want to use the same headset for several phones.

Basics

A wired headset looks and works a lot like headphones. Phone headsets come in two connector sizes: 2.5 mm or 3.5 mm. The 2.5 mm connector fits most cell phones while the 3.5 mm connector fits the standard headphone jack on smart phones. Plug the headset connector into the jack on your landline or mobile phone. Sound is sent and received through the speaker and microphone in the headset. Earbud headphones with a built-in microphone are also considered headsets.

Components

At minimum, a corded headset consists of a connector plug, a wire, a call control button to start and end calls, an earbud and a microphone. Most headsets also have a clip on the wire to attach it to your clothing. Beyond the basics, most headsets have noise canceling capabilities to reduce static and background noise during calls, and often a mute button and volume control keys next to the call control button. Press these buttons to adjust the volume and answer, mute or end a call.

Monaural vs Binaural

Telephone headsets come in two styles and each delivers a slightly different experience. A monaural headset has only one earbud or receiver. It's worn over the ear with an ear hook or attached to a headband-style holder. The microphone comes down from the earbud and sound is delivered as it is in regular telephone handset. Binaural headsets are headphones with an attached microphone, often used in noisy environments to improve call clarity.

Batteries and Amplifiers

Professional grade corded telephone headsets like the ones used in call centers often require batteries to power a voice amplifier. Voice amplifiers work either internally from the headset or a in separate attachment connected between the phone and the corded headset. If your headset has an amplifier, replace the batteries if the sound quality deteriorates.
