Use your Nokia as a modem.
Sometimes you're away from home, need an Internet connection, but there just isn't a Wi-Fi cafe nearby. If you have a Nokia cell phone you can easily use it as a modem. Although it won't give you as fast a connection as a DSL modem will, it will provide enough bandwidth to check e-mail and surf the Internet.
Instructions
1. Buy a mobile phone data cable connection kit. This is simply a set of cables that will connect your cell phone to your computer via USB so that they can communicate with one another. You can usually buy these at your local cell phone or computer store. You can also purchase them online. As of 2010 they cost between $15 and $30.
2. Plug the USB end of the cable into your computer and the other end into the bottom of your phone.
3. Boot up your PC and you will get a message that says "New Hardware Found." When it appears, click on "Have Disk," and then click "Browse." Insert the CD-ROM that came with your cable kit and click "Next." Follow the directions to complete the installation, and once it is complete click "Finish."
4. Click on the "Start" menu on your PC and go to "Network" then "Network and Dial-Up Connection." At the top there will be a tab that says "Network and Sharing Center"; click on it. On the left side of the screen you will see a link that says "Setup a Connection or Network."
5. Select "Setup a Dial Up Connection." Enter the user name and password values. This will vary depending on your cell phone service, but most in the United States use "Guest" (without quotes) for both the user name and password. If those don't work then check with your carrier. There often are instructions on the company's website.
6. Enter the phone number. Again, this may vary depending on your service, but below are the numbers for a few of the largest US carriers.
Cingular/AT&T: *99***2# or *99# (try both).
Verizon: #777
Sprint: #777
If you don't use one of these services, contact your mobile service provider, or go to its website for details.
7. Make up a name for the connection, such as "Nokia Mobile," and click "Save."
Click on the connection in order to open it and click the "Dial" tab. Wait for a few seconds and it will establish a connection to the Internet. Once it has, open the Web browser or e-mail application on your computer and you can now surf just as you normally would.
