Enable The Navigation On A Nokia N97 For Free

Most network carriers like Verizon, AT&T and Sprint provide GPS navigation applications for cell phones like the Nokia N97. However, these applications are not free, and you also have to use your cell phone Internet for accessing the maps. Using Nokia Ovi Maps, you can enable and use GPS on your Nokia N97 for free. It's a free application by Nokia that also provides downloadable maps of various places across the world.

Instructions

1. Check whether you have the latest N97 software installed on your device or not. Enter "*#0000#" on the phone keypad. The phone will then show you the software version number, which should look something like "20.X.XXX." It will let you know if the software needs to be updated. You can then update it using Nokia Software Updater (see Resources).

2. Navigate to the "Menu" on your Nokia N97.

3. Select "Applications."

4. Choose "SW Update."

5. Scroll down and select "Ovi Maps" from the list.

6. Go to "Options" and select "Start Update." Now your Nokia N97 will install Ovi Maps for free, and you will be able to start navigating. Just make sure you have all the maps you need. To avoid data transfer costs, it's a good idea to download and save free maps on your device or memory card beforehand. This way, you won't have to access the Internet on your phone. Nokia Ovi Suite lets you download free maps as well. You can find them at its website (see Resources for link).
