SIM cards are required to activate certain cell phones.
Subscriber Identity Module (SIM) cards allow Global System for Mobile Communications (GSM) phone users the ability to swap phones within minutes. These types of phones also require a SIM card for activation. Your SIM card carriers your phone number, contacts and other subscriber information. When swapping a SIM card into another phone, the new phone instantly carries your new phone number and contact information. This is useful for damaged phones where the SIM card is still intact.
