The Compaq Smart Array 5300 Controller allows a server to set up a redundant array of independent disks (RAID) configuration. A RAID configuration can increase storage space, data security and disk performance. If the Compaq 5300 card is defective, the RAID array will fail to function. Replacing a Compaq Smart Array 5300 Controller card requires removing the old card from the PCI-X slot, disconnecting the devices from the card, and reinstalling the new card into the available slot.
Instructions
1. Press the "Power" button to place the server in standby mode. The power button should glow orange.
2. Remove the AC cable from the AC outlet. Remove the other end of the cable from the server.
3. Power off and remove any peripheral devices connected to the server. Loosen the thumbscrews located on the front of the case.
4. Slide the access panel towards the rear of the server to reveal the internal hardware.
5. Remove the screw securing the card to the case, or lift the hot-plug latch. Lift the defective Compaq Smart Array 5300 Controller card from its PCI-X slot.
6. Disconnect the devices connected to the card. Draw a diagram of the device setup as the drives must be set up in the same order on the new card to restore the array.
7. Remove the new Compaq 5300 Controller card from its protective packaging. Line up the contacts on the edge of the card with the notches in the PCI-X slot.
8. Insert the card into the slot. Apply slight pressure to either end of the card after inserting it into the slot to confirm the card is properly installed. Neither end of the card should pop up from the slot.
9. Screw the card into place. Reconnect the devices to the proper slots on the replacement card. Reassemble the server.
