When problems arise, you can reboot your Nokia E71 cellphone.
When your Nokia E71 cellular phone's keypad, applications and call functions aren't working properly, you can perform a hard reboot to restore the phone to a working state. A hard reboot, also known as restoring the phone to its factory settings, resets the phone and doesn't erase any personal files on your Nokia E71. You don't have to back up your contacts, documents, calendar entries or other files before completing a hard reboot.
Performing a Hard Reboot
Use your Nokia E71's scroll keys in the upper portion of the phone's keypad to select "Menu," "Tools" then "Settings." Navigate to "General" then "Factory settings" to enter the factory settings restoration utility. Enter your phone's device lock code, if you have a set a specific lock code for your phone. If you haven't set a lock code, enter "12345." Press "Yes" when prompted that you're about to reset your Nokia E71 to its factory settings to start the reboot process.
Encryption Issue
Encrypted files on your Nokia E71 aren't safe when performing a hard reboot. If you have files on your phone that contain encryption, you must decrypt them by selecting "Menu" with the scroll keys, then "Tools" and "Encryption." Press "Phone memory" to decrypt documents and files stored in your phone's memory before rebooting the device. Select "Memory card" then "Decrypt" to decrypt files and documents stored on a removable memory card before rebooting the phone. Failure to decrypt documents and files on your Nokia E71 can lead to data loss.
After a Hard Reboot
Once the hard reboot is complete, your Nokia E71 will take a longer time to power on, which is normal. Your phone is still restoring files and re-structuring its data. Let the phone start up fully before attempting to press any buttons on the phone's keypad. Also, don't shut off the phone during the hard reboot process. This will stop the process and prevent the phone from restarting properly.
Device Lock Code
After the hard reboot process is complete, you can set a specific device lock code by navigating to "Menu," "Tools," "Settings," "General" and "Security," if you don't already have one set. Select "Phone and SIM card" then "Lock code." Enter "12345" when prompted and then enter a unique four to 255 character long code. You can use both alphabetic and numeric characters as well as uppercase and lowercase characters. Follow the on-screen prompts to finalize the new device lock code.
