Nokia's N85 and N95 are part of the company's extensive line of smartphones and have a variety of features in common, such as a digital camera and GPS system, but are different in several key areas, as well. Nokia released the N85 in 2008, and the N95, in 2007.
Dimensions and Display
Compact and lightweight, the Nokia N85 and N95 vary in external dimensions. The N85 measures 2 inches wide, 4.1 inches long and 0.6 inches deep and weighs 4.5 oz., compared to the N95, which measures 2.1 inches wide, 3.9 inches long and 0.8 inches deep and weighs 4.2 oz. Both phones feature a 2.6-inch screen that displays more than 16 million colors at 240-by-320 pixels of resolution, but use different types of screens to do so. The N85 employs an active-matrix organic light-emitting diode, or AMOLED, screen while the N95 uses a thin-film transistor screen.
Memory and Power
Nokia's N85 is equipped with 74 MB of internal memory and the N95 features 64 MB of memory and 160 MB of data storage space. Both phones contain a built-in Secure Digital card slot for up to 8 GB of expanded memory. A standard lithium-ion battery provides the N85 with up to 363 hours of standby and 6.8 hours of talk time and the N95 with up to 220 hours of standby and 6.5 hours of talk time.
Camera
Both the N85 and N95 feature advanced built-in 5.1 MP digital cameras that produce high-quality photos and video recordings, but have differing photographic features. For instance, the N85 camera features a 20x digital zoom while the N95's features a 10x digital zoom. Both cameras record video at 30 frames per second using video graphics array technology. Each phone is equipped with a secondary camera that makes videoconferencing possible, but uses different technology. The N85 uses common intermediate format technology for videoconferencing and the N95, like its main camera, uses VGA technology.
Miscellaneous
While both the Nokia N85 and N95 smartphones connect to a personal computer via a USB cable to transfer files and synchronize data, only the N95 features an infrared port for transferring data. Each phone is built on the Symbian OS 9.2 operating system, but use different processors; the N95 uses a 332 MHz Dual ARM 11 processor, while the N85 is powered by a 369 MHz ARM 11 processor. Both phones contain a standalone GPS system, but only the N85 features an assisted-GPS system, which uses a combination of satellite and cellular tower signals to provide navigational functionality. With the maximum amount of memory installed, each phone supports a virtually unlimited amount of contacts with picture and ringtone ID.
