Disconnecting your service
Since its invention, telephones have been widely used and have become essential for instant communication. Nearly everyone today has a phone, cellular or landline. Whether you're moving or just have no use of it, disconnecting your phone is common and easy.
Instructions
Disconnecting your phone
1. Call your provider. Whether you have a landline or a cellular phone, you have a phone provider that connects you to their service. Contact the service provider's customer service to inquire about their cancellation policy. Many times there will be a cancellation fee or an early termination fee if you're canceling before your contract expires. Find out what the standing of your account is and decide if canceling is feasible for you.
2. Call forwarding. Even after you have informed your family and friends of your number change, you're bound to miss a handful of people. Before you completely disconnect your phone, make sure you have a number to forward your calls to. If you don't have a number to forward to, consider Google Voice. You can set up a phone number for you to keep forever and forward old calls to this number. Callers will be connected to an answering machine for them to leave voice-mails.
3. Closing out your bill. If you still have a balance on your phone account, make sure to pay it before it goes to the collections department.
