Cricket is one of the several U.S. cell-phone providers who use CDMA (Code Division Multiple Access) technology on their network. What this means is that, unlike GSM (Global System for Mobile Communications) networks, CDMA phones rely on internal programming -- not removable SIM cards -- to store data and transmit it back and forth between network towers. Therefore, in order to use another network's CDMA phone on Cricket, you must have its internal programming changed so it can intercept Cricket's signals, a procedure which is colloquially known as "flashing."
Instructions
1. Disconnect any service you have with the provider on whose network you previously used your phone. Although flashing the phone will prohibit you from making and receiving calls on the network, the carrier may still opt to charge you if you still have an active account.
2. Visit your local Cricket store. Inform the representative that you would like to use your CMDA phone on the Cricket network. If you are visiting a noncorporate Cricket store, the representative can flash your phone while you wait. Otherwise, he'll direct you to a nearby location where you can have the phone flashed.
3. Activate a new line of service with Cricket. Flashing permits your phone to work on Cricket, but doesn't provide you with a phone number or a means of using Cricket's network. Sign up for a Cricket service and allow the representative to activate your phone while you wait.
