Export Outlook Express Inbox Files to Another Computer


Outlook Express is the default mail client included with Microsoft Windows. It is compatible with any number of Internet e-mail systems such as Gmail, AOL and Yahoo. When moving from computer to computer, you need not worry about losing your Outlook Express mail messages--you can quickly and efficiently back up your files for transfer to another computer.


Instructions


1. Open Outlook Express and click on the "Tools" option in the menu bar.


2. Click on the "Options" item, then click on the "Maintenance" tab at the top of the screen and select the option to "Store Folder."


3. Place your mouse pointer over the box labeled "Your Personal Message Store is Located in the Following Folder."


4. Highlight the text that states the folder name after "Your Personal Message Store is Located in the Following Folder" by left-clicking and dragging the mouse across it.


5. Press the "Ctrl" and the "C" keys at the same time to copy the location of the folder to your clipboard, then cancel out of the dialog box by clicking the "Cancel" button twice.


6. Open the "Start" menu, click on "Run," and then press "Ctrl" and "V" at the same time. Click "OK."


7. Click on the "Edit" menu on the menu bar, click the option to "Select All," then click the option to "Copy." This will copy your mail messages to your clipboard.


8. Insert the USB drive (also called a thumb drive) into your computer.


9. Double click on "My Computer," then click on the drive letter of the USB drive. Press "Ctrl" and "V" at the same time to paste the contents of your mail folder onto the USB drive.


10. Remove the USB drive safely by right-clicking on the USB icon in your taskbar at the bottom of the screen, then clicking "Safely Remove Hardware." When you receive a message saying it is safe to remove the hardware, remove the USB drive and insert it into a USB port on the other computer.


11. Open Outlook Express on the new computer. Go to the "File" menu, select "Import," and select "Messages."


12. Choose Outlook Express 5 or 6 as the program to import from, depending on which version you used on the previous computer. Select the option to "Import Mail From" either an OE5 or 6 directory.


13. Select the "Browse" option and choose the USB drive. Press "OK," then select "All Folders" and click "Next" to conclude the process.
