The Access Point On My Nokia E71 Is Deleted

All Global System for Mobile Communication phones, such as the Nokia E71, require the use of an Access Point Name to gain access to the Internet on a wireless service provider's network. Sometimes, an inadvertent deletion of the APN can cause the E71 to fail in its attempts to access the Web on its carrier's network. It's a situation that is cause for concern, but one that can be fixed with little trouble.

APN

An APN is a Web address that serves as the point through which mobile phones that use GSM, Enhanced Data for Global Evolution or Universal Mobile Telecommunications System technology gain access to the Internet on a carrier's wireless network. Each wireless service provider has a unique APN, which is typically pre-programmed into the phone's network settings and automatically gives the phone the ability to access the Internet over a wireless network. If the APN has been deleted, you can re-enter it into the E71's settings.

Carriers

Because the Nokia E71 is a GSM phone, it can only work with wireless service providers that operate GSM networks. Nokia produced the E71 exclusively for AT&T, but the phone can be used on any GSM carrier's network by unlocking the device, a process that involves purchasing an unlock code from the phone's original carrier. At the time of publication, AT&T and T-Mobile are the only carriers to operate GSM networks, but a variety of regional carriers also provide GSM services, such as SunCom. You can obtain the APN from the E71's carrier by contacting the company's customer service.

Adding APN

If your Nokia E71's APN has been deleted, you can re-enter it through the device's network settings menu, which is accessible from the phone's home screen. Within the settings menu, choose "Connection," "APN Control," then "Add Name Manually." Here you are given the option of adding a new APN. Once the APN URL has been obtained from your wireless service provider, this is where you should enter the address. With the APN re-entered, the E71 should be able to regain an Internet connection through your provider's network.

Alternative Measure

You do not have to use the Nokia E71's 2G or 3G wireless connectivity to access the Internet; you can also use its Wi-Fi functionality to do the same. The phone's Wi-Fi feature provides faster data transfer speeds than its 2G and 3G network functionality and does not require the use of an APN. You need only to be within range of and have access to a wireless router. Typically, most Wi-Fi devices are able to establish a link to a wireless router for up to 300 feet and require you to enter the router's ID number to gain access.
