GSM-enabled phones like this Nokia require a special code to unlock their software.
All global system for mobile communication, or GSM, phones use unlock codes to lift the restrictions on using SIM cards from other wireless companies. Cellular service providers upload special software that locks phone's ability to use SIM cards from other companies before issuing the phone. The subsidy unlock code removes this restriction and allows the client to use the cell phone on any network. Many service providers will give you the unlock code for free.
Instructions
1. Obtain the phone's unique identification number, or IMEI. This 15 digit number is required to generate the subsidy unlock code for the software. Dial *#06# to display the IMEI on the phone.
2. Contact the customer service department of the carrier that issued the phone. Request the subsidy unlock code. Explaining that you need to use the phone for prepaid SIM cards while on a trip overseas will help convince the service representative to give you the code.
3. Ask the service representative how the code must be entered. Different phones require different entry methods and some models also require you to insert a SIM card from another network to trigger the option to unlock the software. Consult an online database of instructions for using unlock codes if the representative is unsure of the proper procedure (see Resources).
4. Enter the unlock code according to the steps described by the representative or online source. The software is now unlocked and the phone will accept SIM cards from any carrier.
