Dismantle A Bathroom Sink

Dismantling a bathroom sink is not difficult.

You can dismantle a bathroom sink without actually removing the sink. A reason to dismantle a sink is to install an upgraded faucet and drain. To accomplish this, most of the work you will perform is underneath the sink, where space is usually cramped. Use tools that allow you to find your way and work in this tight spot with limited lighting available. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Twist the hot and cold water supply valves completely clockwise, shutting off the water. These valves are located on the wall beneath the sink. Fully open the hot and cold knobs on the faucet to drain any water from the lines.

2. Place a bucket beneath the sink, under the trap, which is the curved portion of the drain pipe. Grip the slip-joint nut that connects the trap to the drain tailpiece, using channel-type pliers. Twist the nut counterclockwise, or to the left, to loosen. Pull the trap from the tailpiece, and allow the water inside it to fall into the bucket.

3. Twist the retaining nut on the back of the sink drain counterclockwise, and disconnect it from the drain. Back the pop-up assembly's pivot rod out of the hole in the rear of the drain. Loosen the screw that attaches the clevis --- the strap with a line of holes --- to the lift rod. Pull the lift rod out of the faucet from above.

4. Loosen the locknut that holds the drain to the sink, using channel-type pliers. Turn the locknut counterclockwise. Push up on the drain and hold it from underneath. Unscrew the flange collar from the drain from above, inside the sink. Pull the drain from the sink.

5. Loosen the coupling nuts that secure the supply lines to the faucet, using a basin wrench. Shine a flashlight underneath the sink if you need light to help you distinguish the specific parts. Disconnect the supply lines from the faucet.

6. Unscrew the locknuts that mount the faucet to the sink, using a basin wrench. Twist the nuts counterclockwise. Lift and remove the faucet from the sink.
