Lose Weight Before School Starts

Healthy food and exercise is the way to lose weight

Imagine yourself walking down the hallway on the first day of school. Heads are turning, people are whispering. It's just like a scene from a movie. You've lost that extra 15 lbs. that has been hanging around your middle for the last year. Your jeans look great and your skin is glowing. You've got the motivation, but how do you get started to make this dream a reality? Here is one way to lose weight before school starts.

Instructions

1. Go to www.livestrong.com and register for the free "Daily Plate" (see Resources). Enter your current weight and your weight goal. The program will tell you how many calories you should eat each day to lose 1 to 3 lbs. a week. If you have a smart phone, such as a Blackberry or iPhone, you can download the Livestrong Calorie Counter and enter your information on the go.

2. Input everything you eat to the online Daily Plate calorie counter. You will be amazed at how quickly some foods' calorie content adds up.To keep calories low, incorporate as many fruits and vegetables into your diet as possible. These fill you up without adding many calories. Some of my other low-calorie staples are: Laughing Cow cheese light (35 calories), Progresso Light Vegetable Soup (120 calories) and fat-free CoffeeMate creamer (10 calories per serving).

3. Add some exercise to your routine. Download a book on tape, or some favorite music to your MP3 player. Find a neighborhood track, such as at a high school or middle school. They are usually open to the public. Put on your running shoes and some comfortable clothing.

4. Run one lap (1/4 mile), and then walk half a lap (1/8 mile). Repeat four times for a total of 1.5 miles. Exercise three times a week for at least 30 minutes to help you lose weight. Start off slow, and add more each week.

5. Increase your first lap distance until you are running the entire mile in the second week. After you have run a mile, increase the lap the next week by a quarter mile. Listen to your body, it will tell you how far to go. Always walk a lap at the end to cool down and get your heart rate back to normal. Look around your area for 5K races.
