Access the EVO's settings from the home screen.
The HTC EVO 4G was released in June 2010 exclusively for the Sprint network in the U.S. It is capable of connecting to the Internet using Sprint's 2G, 3G and 4G networks, as well as via a Wi-Fi connection, where applicable. The EVO is assigned an Internet Protocol, or IP, address whenever it has an Internet connection.
Cellular Basics
If the HTC EVO 4G is being used to browse the Internet or transfer data using Sprint's cellular network, it will be assigned an IP address. This address is a specific number assigned to the EVO that distinguishes it from other devices connected to the network. The number provides basic information about the device, including its location, and can be used to track actions performed on the network. If the EVO is having problems connecting to its cellular network, it won't have an IP address, and Internet connectivity will be disabled.
Wi-Fi
The EVO will be assigned a different IP address when it's connected to a Wi-Fi network. The IP address associated with a Wi-Fi connection will provide information regarding the Internet service provider that the signal originates from. If the EVO is unable to connect to a Wi-Fi connection or the option is disabled, it won't be assigned an IP address. The device may still have an IP address associated with Sprint's network, as the EVO automatically connects to it when it's in range.
Settings
Check your Wi-Fi IP address by pressing the "Menu" key at the home screen, tapping "Settings," selecting "Wireless & Networks," tapping "Wi-Fi Settings" and selecting the network you're currently connected to. Tapping "4G Settings" from the Wireless & Networks menu will display the IP address associated with Sprint's 4G network, if applicable. To check your IP address if you aren't connected to Wi-Fi or Sprint's 4G network, type "IP address" in the EVO's Google Search application, and your current IP will be displayed at the top of the list of results.
Troubleshooting
Determine if you have an IP address by attempting to connect to the Internet on your EVO. If you successfully connect, your device has an IP address. Contact a customer service representative If the HTC EVO 4G is unable to connect to the Internet via Sprint's cellular network or Wi-Fi, and you're in an area where the device should be obtaining sufficient signal strength. Confirm that other devices can connect to the network, if possible, to narrow the problem to your device or the network itself.
