Tell If A Nokia Cell Phone Is Locked

If you like your Nokia cell phone but not your wireless service provider, you may want to switch providers while keeping the phone. Often, because phones are "locked," they can be used with only one service provider. This requires you to buy a new phone to switch to a new network. If your phone is unlocked, you can use it with any network. Finding out if your Nokia phone is locked takes only a few minutes.

Instructions

1. Press and hold the Nokia's "Power" key to turn off the phone.

2. Flip the Nokia over and remove its battery cover. Remove the battery, then pull out the SIM card. This card typically has the name of your current phone service provider on it.

3. Insert a SIM card from a network other than the one you currently are using. Replace the battery and its cover and power the phone on.

4. Observe any messages that appear on the Nokia phone's screen. If the phone operates normally, it likely is unlocked. If you see a message such as "SIM card rejected" or "Enter Restriction Code," the phone is locked.
