Install Nokia Data Cable

Cell phones have more than just the ability to make phone calls. Most phones contain firmware, which allows them to store information and operate features, such as calendars, calculators and contacts. Some phones, such as the Nokia N8, even come installed with built-in operating systems, similar to those installed on computers, which give them the capability to store music, videos, games and applications. Whether you buy a Nokia phone with firmware or an operating system, a data cable is generally provided with the unit that allows you to connect to your computer.

Instructions

1. Install the software provided with the Nokia cell phone to your computer. The software is on the disc that came with your Nokia phone. To install it to your computer, put the disc into the CD drive of the computer and wait for the computer to recognize the disc and pull up the installation wizard. Then follow the instructions in the wizard to install the software.

2. Plug the USB data cable provided with the Nokia cell phone into the phone. The small end goes into the Nokia cell phone, usually on the bottom of the phone.

3. Plug the larger end of the USB data cable into any empty USB port on the computer. Once the computer recognizes the connection, the Nokia software usually launches automatically.

4. Open the Nokia software from the "Start" menu if the software does not automatically open when the device is plugged in. To open the software, go to "Start," "All Programs," the "Nokia" folder and click the program name in the folder. When the software launches, the Nokia phone appears in the "Device" pane of the software.
