Power Window Replacement Instructions

Replace your old power window on your own

Power windows are electric powered car windows that have almost completely replaced the old hand-turned crank handle car widows. If your car window is broken or needs to be replaced for any reason, you may want to know the correct procedure for replacing it. Removing an old power window and installing a new one is a process that varies a bit from model to model, but it can generally be done by any car owner.

Instructions

1. Remove the inside door panel of your car. Depending on your car model, remove all the parts from the panel first, including the door handle, armrest and triangle window cover. Remove all the screws on the panel. Then pry off the panel with a flat head screwdriver.

2. Peel off the moisture barrier from the door and set it aside. You will reinstall this later. Be careful not to tear off the plastic cover when you peel it off.

3. Locate the clamps inside the door that hold the window. Loosen the clamps and lift the window to the top of the door. Secure the window to the top of the door with duct tape. The car window should look like it is closed.

4. Locate and remove the bolts of the power window regulator with a flat head screwdriver. There are usually six bolts, but it depends on the car model.

5. Disconnect all the wires connected to the power window regulator. Remove the old power window regulator by twisting it and pulling it out through the opening on the door.

6. Place the new regulator inside the door panel. Be sure to place the new power regulator in the same position as the old one. Consult the manual of your car if you are unsure about the position.

7. Tighten all the bolts of the new power regulator with a screwdriver.

8. Place the window into the new power regulator. Carefully remove the tape holding the window and slowly lower it into the frame of the regulator. Tighten the clamps of the window, but make it slightly loose so you don't break the glass.

9. Reconnect the wires to the new power regulator. Run the wires through the hole on the side of the door and the rubber tube that connects the door to the car. Consult the manual of your car to correctly connect all the wires and wire terminals. Everything should be connected according to the instructions.

10. Reinstall the moisture barrier, the rest of the parts of the door and the cover of the door panel. Do Steps 1 and 2 in reverse order. If needed, adjust the cover to fit all the switches, handles and parts.
