The MAC address is your network card's physical address.
The computer's media access control (MAC) address is the physical number configured on your computer. The MAC address is considered the physical address, because it never changes, and it is hardcoded on your network adapter. The IP address is a virtual address that binds to your MAC address. Even though the IP address changes, your MAC address is always the same. You can view your MAC address using the Windows DOS utility. This is beneficial for network administrators who need to find the MAC address on a client computer.
Instructions
1. Click the Windows "Start" Orb. Type "cmd" into the text box and then press "Enter." This opens the DOS command utility.
2. Type "ipconfig /all" and press "Enter." This displays several pieces of information about your network connection and the network adapters.
3. Scroll down the list of information to the section labeled with your network card. In the "Physical Address" line item is your MAC address value.
