Fix A Broken Slider On A Shine Phone

LG released the Shine series of devices in 2007 as a midrange phone with features that would place it just below the Smartphone level. While there are plenty of features inside the phone, one of the biggest selling points is the sliding design. The LCD would slide up on specially designed hinges to reveal the keypad. While the sliding mechanism was fairly well made, from time to time it could develop issues and either start sticking or stop functioning altogether. Once this happens, the only way to fix the slider is to replace the mechanism.

Instructions

1. Turn the LG Shine over and push up on the battery cover to remove it. Then pull the battery out and slide the SIM card to pull it away from the phone.

2. Remove the six screws on the back of the Shine, using your small Phillips screwdriver. The two screws near the bottom of the phone may have plastic tags covering them. Just remove the tags to access the screws.

3. Place your pry stick between the keyboard housing and the back housing, somewhere along the side of the Shine. Twist the stick to pop the housing free. Then place the stick between the same two housings on the other side of the phone. Twist the stick again, and when the back housing pops free on this side, remove it from the phone.

4. Lift up the right side of the green control board, and use your pry stick to disconnect the connector on the underside of the board.

5. Hold the control board up, without disconnecting the white cable, and remove the six screws found under the board. Then pull the keyboard housing away from the LCD housing.

6. Remove the six screws from the back of the slider housing. The top two screws may be covered, so remove the plastic covers to reach the screws.

7. Place your pry stick between the two halves of the LCD housing and twist the stick to separate them. Move your stick around the outside of the housing until they are totally apart, then remove the front half.

8. Remove the three screws located beneath the LCD. Then lift the LCD from the top and flip it down, without disconnecting the LCD cable.

9. Remove the four screws that were underneath the LCD and the defective slider hinge will fall off the bottom of the LCD assembly.

10. Place the new slider hinge underneath the LCD assembly and screw it back into place. Reverse the rest of these steps to get the LG Shine back together. Remember to thread the large ribbon cable coming off the back of the LCD through the slider hinge and connect it to the control board as you reassemble the device.
