Clear Your Internal Phone Memory

Your phone's memory may hold things you don't want to share.

The internal memory, or built-in memory, of a phone is what keeps track of your contact list and your text messages or notes. It can contain not only personal phone numbers, but a record of any credit card or banking numbers you have recently typed into the phone. Even if your phone uses a SIM card, information is still stored internally. Clearing the internal phone memory is an involved process, as data is stored on many areas on your phone.

Instructions

1. Remove any memory cards that are in the phone (MicroSD, SD or MiniSD), and remove the SIM card, if your phone uses one. Make sure the phone is turned on before continuing (if you had to remove the battery to remove the memory card or SIM, turn the phone on).

2. Select "Contacts" from the main screen of your cell phone to access your contacts list. Go through the entire list, selecting each name and deleting the entry. Consult your cell phone manual to find out where the "Delete Entry" option is located in your Contacts menu (if you do not have a manual use the link in "Resources" to download a copy of one for your phone). Typically, when you choose an entry, the option to "Edit" will appear on the screen. Select that and one of the sub-options will be "Delete Entry." Do this for all of the entries in your Contact list.

3. Open your text messaging (SMS) application on your phone. Most phones have an icon you can choose from the main screen to go to the application (where you can compose, send, or read SMS messages). Press your "Menu" key again (or the key under the "Options" choice on the screen), and select "Delete All." Click on the choice to delete both read and unread messages. When you are done, return to the main menu.

4. Delete all of your media files. Go to your music, video, photo and MMS directories, and either use a "Delete All" option from the menu, or individually highlight each file name, select "Edit" and then "Delete" and remove each one.

5. Open your calendar and clear all of the entries. Make, sure when you choose this option from the calendar edit menu, that you check off the option to remove the calendar history as well, so past events are erased.

6. Open your email settings (where you entered your email address originally to receive notifications on your phone of new emails), and delete the email address you registered.

7. Open your notepad program and delete any notes you may have stored in the memory. Do this for any Voice Notes, if your phone offered this function as well.

8. Open your file manager or memory manager and delete any documents or files that are in your internal memory (such as those used with mobile versions of Word, Excel and so on).

9. Uninstall any third-party programs you downloaded onto your phone.

10. From your main menu, choose "Phone Info" and clear your name and any other information from the "Owner" option.
