Unlock your mobile phone
When you purchase a mobile phone from a service provider, it is usually locked. This prevents you from moving to a different company. However, this can be extremely inconvenient if you travel out of the country a lot or simply want to try out different phone services. The solution is simple: you just need to know unlock your phone.
Instructions
1. Get the International Mobile Equipment Indentity (IMEI) number from our phone. This is your cell phone's serial number and it can be found by removing the battery from your phone and looking at the numbers underneath it. You can also type *#06# into your phone and it will appear. It is a 15-digit number.
2. Go to a mobile phone unlock code website (see Resources). Some of these are free, while others cost between $9.95 and $29.95 per code.
3. Type in your IMEI number in the appropriate box. In the drop-down menu below, select the make and model of the phone.
4. Go to the next drop-down boxes and select the "country" you are in and the "network carrier," such as AT&T or Sprint.
5. Enter an email address and if necessary your billing information. Click "Submit" and your code will be emailed to you within the next 48 hours.
6. Enter the codes from the email into your phone. How you do this will vary from phone to phone depending on your make and model (for exact instructions for your make and model, see Resources). For a Nokia, the steps go like this--you receive a code with a series of numbers and letters that looks something like this:
#pw+454545454567715+1#
Enter every digit, symbol and number exactly as you see it with no spaces. After you are finished, you should get a message that says "Your Nokia Is Unrestricted."
